Understanding Pronation


Pronator is a classification of the foot's position in its natural (AKA neutral/optimal) position.

The front of the foot is angled to the inside of the center of the body.


Supinator is a classification of the foot's position in its natural (AKA   neutral/optimal) position. 

The front of the foot is angled away from the center of the body, relative to the heel


Neutral is a classification/position.

It is the natural position (AKA neutral) of the foot in it's most efficient position to work during gait.

 


Pronation is a motion- the foot lands on the outside edge, the arch begins moving as far as it can to absorb shock.

Supination is a motion which occurs when the heels comes off the ground (opposite to pronation). It does not occur when the foot is landing to the ground.


Overpronation (maximum motion)-the end of the range of motion of pronation, the arch moves as far as it can to absorb the greater shock.

This occurs with every step regardless of walking or running.


Hyperpronation occurs with sports activity, particularly running. The arch spreads as far as it can, and due to higher impact (as compared to walking), the arch further overstretches.


 
 
 
 

Pronation and overpronation INCREASES the angles below. The key element here is that as pronation and overpronation occur, the silicone fluid minimizes and cushions the arch so that the foot is guided through its footstep in a normal way without controlling and bracing the foot in a fixed/pre-set way.
